On November 17, a shopper in Zhongshan, Guangdong reported finding numerous live black insects inside unopened packs of Golden Egg Noodles purchased from RT-Mart’s Shiqi store. Each sealed pack reportedly contained 5–10 insects, even though the product was still within its shelf life.
RT-Mart stated that grain products can easily develop insects if exposed to moisture, suggesting possible improper storage by the customer, though the store admitted it may have failed to detect the issue earlier and is now investigating. The vague response triggered public criticism, with many questioning the supermarket’s quality control.
According to China’s Food Safety Law, consumers can claim up to ten times the product’s price or a minimum of 1,000 RMB in compensation if foreign objects are found. The incident highlights the need for supermarkets to strengthen product inspection and storage practices to ensure food safety.
